This article reflects upon the continuing historical denialism concerning the Korean " comfort women " forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II. We argue that the refusal of the Japanese government and others to squarely confront this wrong is made possible through the exploitation of a différend in Jean-François Lyotard's sense of the term. The différend arises from a complex set of social, cultural, and legal sources, including patriarchal, colonial, and nationalistic constructions of the wrong and its victims. We seek to tentatively expose the nature of the...

The paper seeks to demystify Nietzsche's concept of genealogy. Geneal-ogy tells the story of historical origins in the form of a myth that is betrayed from within, while readers have naively assumed it tells a story that Nietzsche endors-es—whether of history or naturalized origins. Looked at more closely, genealogy, I claim, tells the story of human consciousness and its extraordinary fallibility. It relates the conditions and limits of consciousness and how these are actively avoided and forgotten, for the most part in vain. The lessons are these: there is no human time before...

In 2014 the United Nations called for a ‘data revolution’ to address the inadequate statistics available on developing countries (United Nations, 2014). Despite the resources put into evaluating the impact of the MDGs, there is still some way to go even with regard to standard data (Center for Global Development, 2014). Meanwhile, new alternatives to government-produced statistics are emerging. Of the world’s 7 billion mobile phones, 5.5 billion are in LMICs (figure 1), where 2.1 billion people are also online (ITU, 2015a). The Internet of Things promises a landscape of connected objects...

Abstract Stories told about violence, trauma, and loss inform knowledge of postconflict societies. Stories have a context which is part of the story-teller’s life narrative. Reasons for silences are varied. This article affirms the importance of telling and listening to stories and notes the significance of silences within transitional justice’s narratives. It does this in three ways. First, it outlines a critical narrative theory of transitional justice which confirms the importance of narrative agency in telling or withholding stories. Relatedly, it affirms the importance of story-telling...
